See, I did not ever think much about air filters, but when my allergies got out of shape last spring, I started to think more about air filters. It turns out that the simple filter that I was using was nothing more than a mere nothing.
Therefore, I spent a weekend experimenting on what really works and this is what I discovered on how to maximize IAQ using 20x20x1 filters.
Table of Contents
Why 20x20x1 Filters Are Everywhere
To start with, the reason why this size keeps emerging- it is very simple. Most residential HVAC can be fitted with the 20x20x1. My own size is the usual one, I verified that. The uniqueness that makes it popular is that it is one inch thick and compatible with approximately 60-70 percent of home systems and therefore you are not left searching on rare custom sizes.
However, here is the point not every 20x20x1 filter is identical. The distinction reduces to this factor known as the MERV ratings.
MERV Ratings: What Actually Matters
MERV can be translated as Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and it is simply the effectiveness with which the filter captures stuff. I tested three levels:
MERV 8 – This is your baseline. It traps 90 percent of particles of between 3-10 microns which contain dust and pollen. Otherwise, you do not have pets or allergies, so this will be fine. I did have one that lasted a month and dealt with basic dust.
MERV 11 – Step up from MERV 8. It catches 85% of particles with a diameter of 1-3 microns and 90 percent of the larger particles. I changed this after I adopted a dog, and the dissimilarity was clearly noticeable. Few frozen fur and few sneezes.
MERV 13 – And here the business starts. It collects half of particles less than 0.3-1 microns, and 85 of 1-3 microns. Bacteria, smoke, fine allergens, it blocks most of them. I was able to use this in the wild fire season, and even when the outside air was foul my apartment did not smell of smoke.
The Smart Filter Revolution
This is and this is where things become interesting. I have found intelligent filters that literally indicate when these should be replaced. It is time to stop guessing or going by some typical 90-day rule.
The smart air purifiers are expected to reach $4.71 billion in 2025 with an annual growth of 12.2 percent. These systems also have sensors which monitor the real-time PM2.5, humidity, and VOCs. I put in one using the Filtrete Smart App, and those give me notifications upon real use, not just a calendar notification.
In addition, other filters are currently available with activated carbon layers. They absorb smells that can never be touched by the regular filters, in case you have pets or prepare a lot of food. I prosecuted two months upon one and my place was no longer smelling of last night stir-fry by morning.
Cost vs. Performance What I Actually Spend.
Let’s talk money. MERV 8 filters are inexpensive – in the range of 10-15. MERV 13 can run $25-40. Initially, I assumed that the premium ones were not worth the money.
Then I did the math. Assuming that you are asking to replace a MERV 8 after every 90 days, that amounts to $40-60 yearly. However, assuming you have pets or allergies, and requires a MERV 11 every 60 days, then you are spending between $60-80. The MERV 11 was also worth it in my case, as I stopped purchasing allergy drugs.
It has a washable option as well. K&N produces a washable MERV 13 that it prices at approximately 64 with lifetime guarantee. It is cleaned with brush and water after every 30-60 days. I have not done it, but at a monthly change of filters, it will be covered under two years.
The Benefits to Your Health You Will Definitely Notice.
I am not going to lie, I did not anticipate the difference to feel. However, I was able to wake up less congested when using MERV 11. My girlfriend, who had asthma, felt that she was less likely to reach in her inhaler.
Unclean filters serve as habitats to bacteria and mold, which are dispersed all over your home. When you are not changing the filters, you are essentially pumping the old dust, allergens, and other things which entered the filter. Not fab with children and people with breathing problems.
When it is Time to Replace: Forget 90 Day Rule.
This is what I really do right now: I test my filter once in a month. In case it appears gray or clogged, I replace it. But here’s a better guide:
- Normal house with no pets: in every 90 days.
- One or two pets: every 60 days
- Allergies, More than one pet, or substantial exposure to pollution: every 30 days.
With a smart filter, all you need to do is to follow the app; my smart filter advised a replacement after 75 days since I do a lot of running of my AC during the summer.
FAQ’s
Can I damage my HVAC system with a MERV 13 filter?
Yeah, possibly. MERV 13 Filters filter the air out of the cabin better than the lower ratings that end in reflected evaporator coils as well as overworking the blower motors, in case your system was not so designed.
Presentation Install more information is required before you upgrade: refer to your HVAC manual or request an expert. I have selected MERV 11 owing to the fact that my unit is old and cannot sustain the increased pressure drop.
Are washable filters actually worth it?
For long-term savings, yes. Quality washable MERV 13 will cost you between 60 and 70 but will be around as long as your HVAC system. The catch? You must wash it after every 1-2 months and make sure it is not left wet or you will have some mould. In case you are too lazy to perform maintenance (no judgment), use the disposables.
Conclusion: maximization of the indoor air quality using 20x20x1 filters is not a complex task. Choose the appropriate MERV rating, change it in time, and a bit more expensive, an intelligent filter. Your lungs will thank you.
