Well, I will be frank, III months back, I could not complete any single project. Every idea felt recycled. Every blank page mocked me. I would sit there looking at my computer screen and wondering whether I had lost my grip.

Why Your Brain Isn’t Broken
The thing is I am not special. It occurs to all those working at producing things as their line of business – designers, writers, marketers, etc. And after trying most of the strategies (some of them were crazy), I was able to determine what actually can help you regain your creative advantage.
To start with, I must silence that voice in your head that tells you, you are not a creative person any more.
What Creative Burnout Actually Looks Like
I learned that creativity involves neuroplasticity – in other words, your brain can reconnect itself. When you get used to doing creative stuff you are basically creating new neural circuits. It is exercising, but you can imagine.
The catch? Those ways are foggy when you are burnt out. You’re not broken. You’re just running on empty.
Nonetheless, what exactly constitutes creative burnout.
That was the way I knew that I was being burnt out (not lazy):
- Projects that I previously enjoyed were a burden to me.
- I continued to recycle old certified ideas.
- I would be left with no feeling even after completing an activity.
- My self-denunciation increased to a cacophony.
Nodding your head along, you are at high chances of dealing with burnout, not creative slump only. The discrepancy is decisive, as the fix is varying.
What Actually Worked for Me
I Changed Where I Work
Sounds too simple, right? However, sitting at the same desk daily with my ideas killed me.
I began carrying my lap top to cafes, parks and even my dining table. The new surroundings and natural light did it better than I had imagined. Studies support this fact, open spaces and sunlight will in fact enhance creative thinking.
I Stopped Forcing It
This was one that was counterintuitive. I would roll over blocks.
Bad move.
I would have heard about the incubation time, i.e. your brain should work with stuff in the unconscious. I find my best ideas when I am taking a walk or on a shower and not when I am grinding on my desk. Thus I created time off into my schedule. Ten-minute walks. No phone. Just thinking.
I Started Moving Again
I am not referring to marathon training. Just basic movement.
Stretching. Dancing to one song. Walking around my block. Physical activity disrupts thought mechanisms and forces blood to creative areas of the brain. It also afforded me some activity other than glaring at my screen.
There was Good and Bad Stuff I Documented.
I began to maintain a disorganized journal, ideas, half-ideas, atrocious drawings, etc.
Research has indicated that quality and output improves with regular innovative practice. You are training your brain to come up with ideas on a regular basis even when they are not brilliant.
The faulty ideas were ultimately transformed into good ones. That’s how it works.
I Found Weird Inspiration
I ceased to read materials in my discipline and began searching in other places.
Art museums when I’m a writer. Music when I’m stuck on design. At times of excess thought. Unexpected combinations will result in creativity and not scrolling through the work of your competitors.
The Science Part (Stay With Me)
The activity of the brain depends on your activity. However, when you perform creative tasks, you engage the area such as medial prefrontal cortex i.e., the areas which are involved in emotional regulation.
Translation: translation does not merely turn you into a more creative person. It is used to facilitate stress, anxiety, and mental flexibility as well.
I do not mean that creativity is therapy (but it could be one). I mean that practice makes you physically change the structure of your brain. That’s wild.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
Three weeks later I observed changes. It took approximately two months to improve.
The following factors got me ahead faster:
- Regularity instead of frequency (15 minutes per day beats and random 3 hours sessions)
- External responsibility (I shared my creative ambitions with friends)
- Eliminating judgment (there should not be this sucks at least during first drafts)
My Biggest Takeaway
Reawakening your creative advantage is not some kind of inspiring or waiting till the muse comes.
It has to do with creating structures which enhance creativity- shifting environments, incubation time, exercise, and practising without being judged.
Your brain is programmed to become. You still have not lost your imagination. It only requires appropriate conditions to regenerate.
Start small. Select one of these changes. Try it for two weeks. Then add another.
Three months back I was not able to complete anything. I am making, now, again–not so well, not so well, but steadily. That’s the goal.
You’ve got this.
