Here, I would like to be open, I was completely puzzled as I heard about SD-WAN, I did not think that it was another tech buzzword that schools did not even actually require. Then I was talking to some IT admins at the local schools, and boy, I was wrong.
You may have heard that the demands of internet are booming in a school or you may be working in the field of education technology. Children live streaming lessons. Employees transferring the assignments. Video conferences with distance learners. It’s a lot. And traditional networks? They’re struggling to keep up.
That is where SD-WAN in education is involved. I want to break it down and explain why it is becoming such a huge issue in schools.

What’s SD-WAN, Anyway?
SD-WAN is an abbreviated term that means Software-Defined Wide Area Network. I know — sounds technical. But here’s the simple version.
Campuses are linked in a traditional school network over very costly dedicated lines (such as MPLS). They are dependable but intolerably costly. SD-WAN has a more diverse approach. It also operates on software to support several connections to the internet simultaneously – broadband, fiber, even 4G LTE.
Consider it in the following way: rather than using a single highway, which can be costly, you are using multiple roads simultaneously. Should one traffic jam, it forces the traffic to take an alternative route. Smart, right?
Now Why Schools Are Making the Switch.
These are the observations I have made when speaking to schools that had switched to SD-WAN as an educational organization:
The Budget Reality
Schools do not have unlimited IT funds. I have been in districts where MPLS connections were spent in thousands of dollars on connections merely to have their main campus and a satellite. SD-WAN also allows them to employ less expensive internet solutions without compromising performance to do so. One of the IT directors informed me that within the first year they were able to reduce their network costs by approximately 40 percent.
Many Campuses, a single headache.
Have five schools in town, that is a district? The traditional networks ensure that having them as separate entities is a nightmare. SD-WAN in education has them all connected in a single central dashboard. IT teams are in a position to scout all places, manage bandwidth, and correct problems without having to drive through the county.
Remote Learning Does Not End any Flatter.
Do you remember when schools were rushing to establish the remote learning? That was a revelation of network vulnerability, all right. SD-WAN simplifies ensuring support to students and teachers that work at home. It places more emphasis on video conferencing traffic in order to ensure that Zoom calls do not interfere in the middle of the lesson.
Increased Performance at the Right Place.
This is an interesting fact that I acquired: SD-WAN shows priorities to the selected applications. Therefore when the science lesson is broadcasting a live lab demonstration, it has the priority over a person downloading files at the workplace. It is simply a matter of ensuring that important things proceed well.
What SD WAN in Education Does.

May I be practical, a quarter. What does this technology really do on a day-to-day basis?
Traffic Management: It automatically directs traffic on the internet using the optimum connection. In case your primary line is slow it switches to a backup and no one notices.
Security: The SD-WAN solutions come with an inbuilt firewall and encryption in most cases. That is giant in terms of schools that face privacy of student data needs.
Cloud Access: More educational institutions are utilizing Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and cloud storage. SD-WAN optimizes the connections to these services thus loading in a faster manner.
Visibility: Information Technology employees can see what is going on in the network in real-time. They have the capacity to identify problems when teachers begin to call about slow internet.
Is It Worth It?
The opinion I have held after researching this is as follows; when you are an individual school with very simple internet requirements there is a possibility that you may not require SD-WAN at this time. However, when it comes to the matter of multiple locations, remote learning, and a continuous bandwidth battle, it is worth exploring.
There is a start-up cost and planning involved in the setup. You will have to acquire matching hardware and a person who knows how to configure the network. But most schools I have spoken to say that in the long-run it is viable with regard to saved money and increased performance.
Where to Start
SD-WAN may be the way in education and it will help you to discuss it with your IT team. They will also be aware of your existing arrangement and its suitability to your case. There are small ones that begin with two campuses and then build up.
There is no need to transform everything within the night. This is one of the reasons why I like this tech. It can be used as a transitional device to your already existing network.
Final Thoughts
I understand, technology in education is evolving rapidly, it is difficult to understand what is actually valuable, and what is a mere buzzword. However, as I have observed, SD-WAN in education is the solution to actual issues confronted by schools on a daily basis.
Faster connections. Lower costs. Better control. It is not market talk, that is what occurs when you leave behind the old network structures.
SD-WAN may be worth a second time around in case your school is finding your current internet connection to be barely holding its own or you are spending too many resources on intercampus connections. It will just not be a magic remedy. As any technology, it can be effective when it is planned correctly and supported by the right tech.
But yes, when I have dug into this, I properly could understand the reasons why more schools are switching.
