How to Manage Virtual Memory on Windows 11 Using CMD

In the Windows operating system, there is a virtual storage which is a hidden file (page file) on the hard disk to store data and files that are frequently used, freeing up space on the main or physical memory for profit file.

This is also useful when the system runs out of memory for some tasks and at the same time relies on virtual memory for some tasks. While the system is good enough to handle memory issues on its own, there are times when the default settings don’t work as well as the market.

If you are having memory and performance problems on your computer running Windows 11 operating system or getting messages like “Your system is low on virtual memory,” consider increasing the system memory .

There are different ways to increase virtual storage on your Windows 11 computer, but for this guide, we will rely on the command line. This is another step.

How to Manage Virtual Memory on Windows 11

How to increase virtual memory in Windows 11 using the command line

Step 1: Open command prompt on your computer running Windows 11 operating system To do this, open the start menu and search for “Command Prompt”. In the search results, right-click the application and select “Run as administrator”.

Step 2: Now, check the status of paging file or virtual memory in your system, type this command:

wmic pagefile list /format:list

Step 3: To make your device virtual memory, you need to disable the feature that automatically manages file paging. To do this, type this command:

wmic computersystem where name=”%computername%” set AutomaticManagedPagefile=false

Step 4: Now you need to apply command to set initial virtual memory size and maximum virtual memory size. This is the process for it.

wmic computersystem where name=”%computername%” set AutomaticManagedPagefile=false

Be sure to replace your size and range with the desired value in the command above.

Step 5: Once this is done, you have to restart your computer to apply the changes. To restore your system using command prompt, type this command:

shutdown -r -t 00

And that’s it. When your computer restarts, you will notice that the system memory has increased. To check this, you can repeat steps 1 and 2 of this guide to get information about virtual memory status.

Virtual storage is useful, especially when system performance is reduced due to lack of storage space. But this is not the best solution and if the performance problem still occurs then the best solution is to add more RAM to the computer and this should solve the memory problem.
