In 2025, Louisiana‘s public health officials accounted for 26 instances of the deadly Vibrio vulnificus a 4-fold increase over the state‘s 10-year rolling average for this same period. Five of those infected died. What Is Vibrio Bacteria?
Vibrio is a family of naturally encountered bacteria present in warm, brackish, and salt water. They are gram-negative, comma-shaped bacteria, which have persisted for as long as humans have recorded them in the Gulf Coast.
Most vibrio‘s are not pathogenic for humans. A few are. The two that will be most important to consider for any reading about vibrio‘s in Louisiana are Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. These two are commonly encountered in State lab reports, and human diseases.

I have followed the two-hour rule of refrigeration for a number of years, especially in regard to avoiding vibrio; little did I realize, however, that this particular practice has also been shown to be one of the best ways to slow bacterial growth overall.
How to Protect Yourself While Swimming in Gulf Coast Waters
This advice is a lot easier than most people suppose. Vibrio is not waiting in the water to come snag you as you swim it‘s very much a wound-exposure risk.
- Use a waterproof bandage to cover any cut, scrape, fresh tattoo.
- If you are suffering from a chronic illness such as liver disease or diabetes and have an open wound, do not swim.
- Have a shower after your swim, particularly if has been in brackish water or coastal areas.
- 3) Do not swallow water while swimming or wading.
My personal rule when I go to Gulf beaches: examine for abrasions pre-entry, not post-entry. This may seem spurious, yet it is actually forward thinking, as most pre-goers examine while already shallower than they previously were!

Storms alter the balance. After Katrina, concentrations of vibrio in Lake Pontchartrain increased dramatically near the canals during and immediately following the period of floodwater pumping, returning to normal levels over the following two months. Florida experienced a similar spike in V. vulnificus infections following Hurricane Ian.
Floodwaters, storm debris, and daily cuts and scrapes from cleanup efforts all contribute to far greater opportunities for wound exposure than a typical week. How Louisiana Officials Monitor Vibrio Levels
