My 2-Month Reality Check: Testing Top Germany VPS Hosting Providers

Well, I have done two months of trial of three Germany VPS providers since I required GDPR compliant hosting in one client project. Here is what really transpired – no fluff, mere real experience.

Why I Even Bothered With German Servers

My hosting company is a small E-Commerce, which stores information on EU customers. My old U.S.-based host? The entire GDPR nightmare come to pass. That is why I decided to find the best Germany VPS hosting solutions that would not burn my wallet and mind.

The study led me to three brands that continued to emergenamely Hetzner, Contabo and Ionos. I subscribed to entry-level plans with all three and compared them to each other within 60 days.

Hetzner: The One that Just Works.

The first one was Hetzner at EUR4.51/month. Installation was also a matter of perhaps 10 minutes – they do not complicate the matter. My NVMe SSD storage instance started running, and frankly? The time lag between my former host and me was instantaneous.

The following is what I liked: their dashboard is with no obtrusive upsells each time you log in. My network remained anchored during my tests. I had a WordPress site and WooCommerce, and when people were chastising the site (thankfully as a result of Facebook ads), it did not survive.

The catch? It’s unmanaged. Unless you feel at ease using SSH and rudimentary Linux commands you will need to learn quick or you will need to pay someone. To have the security hardened, I took a weekend to go through the tutorials that DigitalOcean provided me with.

Contabo: National Choice at a Compromise.

Contabo has entered at EUR5.36/month – again cheap. On a piece of paper, it was fabulous: 12 datacenters, storage that is compatible with S3, similar to Hetzner specifications.

Reality? The performance was… fine. Nothing outstanding, but good considering the cost. I also observed some stuttering during European high time, which is logical due to their agents being very aggressive in pricing their plans. You are sharing hardware with more neighbours.

Nevertheless, here is where Contabo happened to win my heart: their object storage system. The S3 compatible system happens to be quite handy in case you are running backups or storing media files. Automated backups took me a little less than 20 minutes to set up.

Would I apply it to a high traffic production site? Probably not. Staging environments or personal projects? Absolutely.

Ionos: The Premium Option

Ionos is on the cheapest of the three at EUR3.99/month, but it is a deception. They have a very modest entry strategy. To acquire similar specifications, I increased to the EUR8 /month level.

It is that 99.99% uptime guarantee that you are paying here. I was not out of my job in over 2 months. Zero. Their customer care is even quicker by answering within less than an hour which is not seen in this price range.

The interface is access control to a greater extent than the others. Ionos is a good choice in case you are moving to migrating shared hosting and would like to be familiar with what you are used to. They also do certain management functions that you would manually do onto Hetzner.

Downside? Less flexibility. You are playing in their ecosystem, and it is great until you have a desire to do something custom.

What I Actually Learned

Each of the three meets the requirements of GDPR compliance, keeping the data in Germany, providing the correct data processing agreements, and being ISO 27001 certified. There is no compromise there when it comes to dealing with EU data.

Hetzner performed best in my tests in performance. Ionos was most reliable. Contabo was the most economical in the case when you require numerous instances and intensive storage.

There are not bad people among them, they are simply different. The market of VPS in Germany continues to expand rapidly, and they understand that currently they are competing not only on price.

My Honest Recommendation

Hetzner is better, whereas in case you feel comfortable with Linux and seek the optimal performance to cost blend, opt with it. I kept one of these to use in my production location.

Ionos is well worth the floating few euros, in case you require hand-holding and can not afford any downtime. Without them, hours of problem-solving would have been wasted.

In the event that you are testing or running many projects with a tight budget, Contabo achieves the task. The only thing is not to hope wonders in busy periods.

The big lesson? The idea of Germany VPS hosting is not about the best one, but rather about the one that fits the requirements of your real needs. I believed that I required managed hosting including 24/7 telephone support. It turns out that I only required high-speed servers and best documentation.

Two months after, I am still running on Hetzner. It takes less than 2 seconds to load the site, GDPR auditors are satisfied and I am not paying a subscription of 50/month in features which I do not use.

The right thing to do is sometimes the easy one.
