Well, I did a two-month trial of three German providers because we needed GDPR-compliant hosting for an AI project. Here is what really transpired – no fluff, just real experience.

Why I Even Bothered With German Servers
My hosting company is a small e-commerce company that stores information on EU customers. My old U.S.-based host? The entire GDPR nightmare happened. That is why I decided to find the best German VPS hosting solutions that wouldn’t burn my wallet or my mind.
My research narrowed it down to three brands: Hetzner, Contabo, and Ionos. I subscribed to entry-level plans with all three and compared them within 60 days.
Hetzner: The One that Works.
The first one was Hetzner at EUR4.51/month. Installation was also a matter of perhaps 10 minutes – they do not complicate the matter. My NVMe SSD storage instance started running, and frankly? The time lag between my former host and me was instantaneous.
What I liked: their dashboard has no obtrusive upsells each time you log in. My network remained anchored during my tests. I had a WordPress site with WooCommerce, and when people were chastising the site (thankfully, because of Facebook ads), it didn’t survive.
The catch? It’s unmanaged. Unless you feel at ease using SSH and rudimentary Linux commands, you will need to learn quickly, or you will need to pay someone. To harden the security, I spent a weekend going through the tutorials DigitalOcean provided.
Contabo: National Choice at a Compromise.
Contabo has entered at EUR5.36/month – again cheap. On paper, it was fabulous: 12 data centers, S3-compatible storage, and specs similar to Hetzner.
Reality? The performance was… fine—nothing outstanding, but good considering the cost. I also noticed some stuttering during peak European hours, which makes sense because their agents are very aggressive with pricing. You are sharing hardware with more neighbors.
Nevertheless, this is where Contabo won my heart: their object storage system. The S3-compatible system is quite handy if you are running backups or storing media files. Automated backups took me a little less than 20 minutes to set up.
Would I apply it to a high-traffic production site? Probably not. Staging environments or personal projects? Absolutely.
IONOS: The Premium Option
IONOS is the cheapest of the three at EUR3.99/month, but it is a deception. They have a very modest entry strategy. To get similar specs, I upgraded to the EUR 8/month level.
That 99.99% uptime guarantee is what you’re paying for here. I was not out of my job for over 2 months. Zero. Their customer care is even quicker, answering within an hour, which you don’t see at this price range.
The interface offers more access control than the others. IONOS is a good choice if you’re on shared hosting and want to stay with what you are used to. They also handle certain management functions that you would do manually on Hetzner.
Downside? Less flexibility. You are playing in their ecosystem, and it is great until you want to do something custom.
What I Actually Learned
Each of the three meets GDPR requirements: keeping data in Germany, providing the correct data processing agreements, and being ISO 27001 certified. They don’t compromise on handling EU data.
Hetzner performed best in my performance tests. IONOS was most reliable. Contabo was the most economical when you need numerous instances and intensive storage.
No one is bad; they are simply different. The VPS market in Germany continues to expand rapidly, and they understand they are competing on more than price.
My Honest Recommendation
Hetzner is better, and if you’re comfortable with Linux and want the best performance-to-cost, choose it. I kept one of these for my production site.
IONOS is well worth the extras if you can’t afford any downtime. Without them, you’d have wasted hours on problem-solving.
If you are testing or running many projects on a tight budget, Contabo gets the job done. Just don’t expect miracles during busy periods.
The big lesson? The idea of Germany VPS hosting isn’t about the best one, but about the one that fits your real needs. I thought I needed managed hosting, including 24/7 telephone support. It turns out that I only required high-speed servers and the best documentation.
Two months later, I am still running on Hetzner. The site loads in under 2 seconds, GDPR auditors are satisfied, and I am not paying 50/month for a subscription for features I don’t use.
Sometimes the right thing to do is the easy one.
