However, a multi-mode optical network is likely to have a significantly higher latency than single-mode fiber. Therefore, consider your network’s overall performance and how important each factor is when comparing optical network latency.

Internet connection latency

For example, while back-office reporting applications can tolerate lower latency, some corporate functions simply cannot be interrupted.

In addition, cloud and edge server locations and users’ latency characteristics vary across regions. Therefore, analyzing regional latency is particularly critical to assessing the performance of cloud and edge servers. For example, Figure 3 shows user coverage in continents. While the Americas, Europe, and Oceania have the best range, Africa has no cloud data centers. This study shows that the cloud can match edge server performance, despite the differences in network latency.

While individual latencies will vary according to location, the average reported latency for each of the five major public cloud providers represents the region. For example, one customer may experience the lowest latency in the Northeast but have higher average latency in another area due to a different network provider. This is especially important for enterprises with large customer bases who have to service many customers from many different countries.
