Prerequisites

Custom sizes and values are only available for resources that have Universal Analytics enabled or that contain at least one application reporting view. Custom parameters and values are supported by the Google Analytics SDK for Android and iOS 2.x or later, analytics.js and the Measurement Protocol

Custom sizes and values require additional configuration in your Google Analytics account and tracking code. After completing both configuration steps, you can use them in your reports.

Limitations and warnings

For each property, there are 20 indexes available for different custom parameters and 20 indexes for custom values. 360 accounts have 200 indexes for custom sizes and 200 for custom values.

Special parameters cannot be removed, but you can disable them. You should not try to reuse custom sizes. When you edit the name, scope, and value of a custom parameter, both the old and new values can be associated with the old or new dimension name. This conflicts with the data in your reports so that it cannot be separated by a filter.

Life cycle of indicators and custom indicators

The life cycle of a custom size or value consists of four stages:

Settings – Define custom parameters and values using an index, name, and other properties, such as scope.
Collection – send values and custom values to Google Analytics since deployment.
Processing: Your data is processed using custom dimensions and value definitions and any report filters.
Reports – Create new reports using custom parameters and values in the Google Analytics user interface.

Before you can send parameter values and custom values to Google Analytics, they must first be defined in the Google Analytics property. Each Google Analytics property has 20 indexes available for custom sizes and another 20 indexes for custom values.

When you define a parameter or custom value, you specify its name and other settings for a specific index. The special parameters have the following configuration values:

Title – The name of the custom parameter that will be displayed in your reports.
Range: Indicates to which data the custom size or measure will be applied. Learn more about Scope.
Active: whether the value of a custom parameter or measure will be processed. Inactive custom parameters may still appear in reports, but their values are not processed.
Custom values have the following settings:
Name: The name of the custom value that will be displayed in your reports.
Type – Sets how the custom metric value will be displayed in reports.
Min (or) Max value – The minimum and maximum values which will be processed and displayed in your reports.
Active: whether the value of the special metric will be processed. Idle custom values may still appear in reports, but their values are not processed.
Custom sizes and values can be defined in the Google Analytics user interface.

Collection

Parameter values and custom parameters are sent to Google Analytics during data collection as a pair of index and value parameters. The index parameter corresponds to the index of a custom parameter or value that was defined during the configuration phase.

Unlike other types of data, custom parameters and values are sent to Google Analytics as dimensions attached to other visits, such as pageviews, events, or e-commerce transactions. As such, custom parameter or size values must be set before invoking tracking for that value to be sent to Google Analytics.
