7 Maven packaging types to consider

Do you remember when you first picked up your iPhone? Did you feel the sleek white box when it was first unwrapped? From the moment you touched the box for the first time you knew this device was important, quality, and significant. And it wasn’t by accident! To align their brand with their commitment to top-of-the-line product innovation and consumer experiences, Apple meticulously planned how they would package their product.

Clearly, packaging plays an important role in the perception of a product’s value and, as a whole, it hasn’t changed much in recent years, as compared with technology such as portable devices that has undergone constant innovation. Today’s market offers a plethora of packaging options and it can be challenging to choose the one that is right for your product. Here are some different types of packaging solutions you can use to enhance your customer’s experience with your product!

1. Paperboard boxes

Lightweight but strong, paperboard is a material made from paper. You can cut and shape it into any shape you want. Personalized packaging is therefore an ideal use for it. Essentially, it is made from pulp that is derived from wood or recycled waste paper. Different grades of cardboard packaging are available, depending on their use.

Packaging for cosmetics, medicines, milk and juice, cosmetics, frozen food, and more can use SBS (or solid bleached sulfate) paperboard. For those who prefer the natural and environmentally-friendly look of recycled paper, kraft or CUK (coated unbleached kraft) paperboard packaging are the optimal choice. Food-related products, as well as frozen food products, often do not suit Kraft because it is less moisture resistant. It is possible to look high-end with paperboard packaging without having to pay high prices.

2. Corrugated boxes

Boxes made from corrugated cardboard are commonly referred to as cardboard. Many people consider corrugated boxes to be ‘cardboard’ since they serve to make shipping, shoe, and storage boxes.  It is important to realize that corrugated boxes can be classified according to their strength and durability. There are, however, certain corrugated materials that are easy to identify. So, what makes a corrugated material corrugated? This is accomplished by the corrugation of its surface (or the fluting).  Corrugated materials are easy to recognize. The box is made up of three layers, including an outside liner, an inside liner, and a corrugated medium (also called fluting). These three layers work together to create the box’s strength and rigidity.

Paper is the main raw material for making corrugated board; the paper is made on large, highly precise machines called corrugators. It is feasible to reuse and recycle such boards as a source of pulp fiber indefinitely. Generally, corrugated boards come in four forms: single facing, double facing (single wall), twin facing, and triple facing. Packaging made from these materials can have a variety of characteristics, performances, and strengths. Corrugated packaging is made by cutting and folding board into different shapes and sizes. Retail boxed packaged goods, pizza delivery boxes, little consumer packages, and so forth are all other applications of corrugated board packaging.

3. Plastic boxes

Paper clips to spaceships are made of plastic. Some traditional materials have been replaced by plastic, such as wood, leather, glass, and ceramics.

Packaging in plastic boxes has many advantages over packaging in paperboard boxes, including the ability to recycle the boxes and their greater durability. Containers made of airtight plastic help protect food from contamination and preserve quality. Plastic packaging is also safe for food storage under extreme conditions, as it does not break easily.

Its flexibility also makes plastic a common choice for packaging because it allows the product to be displayed at any angle, without having to open the package. It is lightweight and flexible and can be coated or added to films to enhance the appearance of packaging.

As opposed to what most people believe, plastic is actually recyclable because it takes less energy to produce a new one than glass, for example. Furthermore, it costs less to produce!

4. Rigid boxes

Maybe you have ever wondered what type of packaging they use to package iPhones or luxury retail products such as Rolex, Tiffany & Co and Marc Jacobs. Despite its durable and premium appearance, it still doesn’t appear to be cardboard. A rigid box is made from this type of cardboard.

Boxes made of rigid paperboard are 4 times thicker than ordinary folding cartons and are constructed using highly condensed paperboard. Rigid boxes are easiest to identify in real life by the boxes that hold Apple’s iPhones and iPads, which are two-piece setup rigid boxes.

The rigid box style is definitely the most expensive in comparison to paperboard and corrugated boxes. Boxes made from rigid materials do not typically require expensive dies or a lot of heavy machinery, and they are often handwritten. Additionally, since they are not collapsible, they’re larger during shipping, so they’re more likely to incur higher shipping fees.

Cosmetic boxes, jewellery boxes, technology boxes, and luxury couture boxes are commonly used in merchandising. With a rigid box, features such as platforms, windows, lids, hinges, compartments, domes, and embossing can easily be incorporated.

5. Chipboard packaging

Food, cosmetics, medical, and electronic industries make use of chipboard packaging. An example of a chipboard is reclaimed paperboard. Reclaimed paperboard can be readily cut, folded, and shaped. It provides an affordable way to pack your products.

There are different densities of the material, and the density determines its strength. To make chipboard more durable for printing images, you can use bleach sulfate and CCNB (Clay Coated News Back), which make the material even more pliable for printing images.

As chipboard is a lightweight product, it cannot be used for heavy items, such as heavy groceries, such as cereal, crackers, tissue boxes, and so forth. Chipboard will also easily delaminate if it is stored in a humid environment, causing it to discolor and expand.

6. Poly bags

An elastic, thin, plastic film fabric is used to make a poly bag, which is also called a pouch or plastic bag. Packaging of this type is one of the most common types. It can contain many different types of products, such as food, flowers, waste, chemicals, magazines, and so on.

The distinctive characteristics of poly bags are their durability, lightness, reusability, and flexibility. Despite their simplicity in design, style & size, poly bags can remain cost-effective despite being fully customized. Poly bags can also be recycled, depending on their construction. In order to ensure that the products are well secured and visually appealing to customers, poly bags feature security features such as tape attachments, hanging holes, and carrying handles.

7. Foil sealed bags

Many coffee and tea packages use foil-sealed bags. How come? It helps maintain the flavor of the products, protects them from coming into contact with bacteria, and helps extend their shelf life. Packaging products such as bedding and clothing may also be sealed in foil bags. To prevent fungi and other bacteria from growing on the fabric, it is necessary to remove the oxygen from the bag. A foil seal is also used to protect food from spoiling, including nuts, cereals, smoked fish, cheese, and cured meats.
