When there are some network issues, and when you try to troubleshoot,  you might end up getting the message “ethernet doesn’t have a valid IP configuration.”  The problem of not having a valid IP configuration is some issue that you can solve yourself. Identify the reason and then solve the problem. There are some procedures you could follow to solve this problem. But before going into it lets us see some necessary details of why the issue happens. It will help you to understand the problem and also the solution you are going to give.

An IP address is similar to your any other address; it gives an identity to your system. Any device on the world wide web a.k.a www has an IP address which acts as an identifier to your computer for online communication. The error of not having a valid ip configuration arises when there is some issue with assigning an IP address to your system, and in turn, your system fails to connect to the network. In other words, your system fails to receive IP addresses from DHCP ( Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol); it is a network protocol system that allows servers to assign IP addresses to computers automatically.

Now over to the steps on how can we solve the issue:

  1. Restart your computer and router

The magical trick used in every issue, and it works too, in many cases. So try restarting your computing, it helps in resetting all the outgoing and incoming connections. After you turn off your system, then switch off your router too. The router will have a button behind it to turn it off. Then wait for a few seconds to reset and then switch it on. After that, restart your computer, and see if the issue has been solved. If yes, you’re lucky or else you can check the other options.

It is yet another method to refresh the IP address configuration. It is indeed an effortless procedure. The steps are as follows:

Right-click on the ethernet icon on your taskbar.

Select the option Open Network & Internet Setting

A new window will appear, under Advanced Network Settings, you will see the option Change Adapter Option, select the option.

Now another window appears with your ethernet connection on it, right-click on the icon and choose Disable.

After some time you can right-click again and choose Enable.

These steps would help in receiving a new valid IP, check if the issue is solved.

  • Get the auto IP and DNS

Another option is to try and get the automatic IP and DNS. The steps are similar to the previous one. Let us see how to get the auto IP and DNS

Right-click on the ethernet icon on your taskbar.

Select the option Open Network & Internet Setting

A new window will appear, under Advanced Network Settings, you will see the option Change Adapter Option, select the option.

Now another window appears with your ethernet connection on it, right-click on the icon and choose Properties.

In the window that appears click on Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPV4) or Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPV6) whichever you are using.

These steps help to get the IP address automatically without manually configuring one. Check if the network issue is solved. If not, there are still other steps you can check.

  • Update or reinstall network adapter driver

Yet another method you can try to make things work. Let us see what a network adapter driver is first and then look into the steps. A network adapter driver is the program that facilitates the connection between the network connection and your system; it helps in the transfer and reception of data. So if there is a fault in the network adapter driver, it can cause internet connection issues. That is why we are checking the network adapter driver. Follow the below steps to update or reinstall the network adapter driver:

Right-click on the window icon, choose Device Manager > Network adapters (double click)

From the list, right-click on your driver and choose Uninstall Device and then again confirm to uninstall.  Restart your system, and this would automatically install a fresh driver copy. Check if the issue is solved, if not solved.

Follow all the above instructions and instead of choosing  Uninstall, choose Update Device.

These are the steps to update and reinstall your network driver. Check if the problem is solved. Most probably you will be good to go.

  • Run the network adapter troubleshooter

Another effortless way is to run the network adapter troubleshooter. But the chances to find a solution to solve the problem is minimal. But still, it is worth trying. So to do this, the steps are as follows:

Type Network Adapter in the search space on the taskbar.

Choose Find and fix problems with your network adapter.

Select Advanced and check to Apply repairs automatically and then choose Run as administrator. Click on Next.

Choose your network adapter from the list and then walk in through the questions that follow and complete the troubleshooting.

  • Refresh the network settings

The last step in the list, try refreshing the network settings. Things might get right by doing this. Following are the steps:

Press Windows button + x, you will get a menu, choose Command Prompt(Admin).

A window will prompt out asking you permission to make changes. Click on Yes.

The command prompt window appears. Type the following commands.

  • ipconfig /flushdns
  • ipconfig /renew
  • nbtstat –R
  • nbtstat –RR
  • netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
  • netsh winsock reset

Do not forget to press Enter key after each command. After you typed in all the commands, and got a successful completion message, restart your system. And check to see if the network is working correctly.
