Season 12 even let you go wild while in season 13 they disabled every legendary and mythical pokemon. Pokémon Legends ZA Season 14 is a temporary Ranked Battle of course completely centered on Flying-type Pokémon. Rather than allow free team customization as you would expect in a normal ranked season, every Pokémon you register must be drawn from a designated set of Flying-types taken from the Lumiose and Hyperspace Pokédex entries.

Matches are four players and real-time, not turn-based 1 vs 1 like older Pokémon games were. You bring a team of three, all players are auto-scaled to level 50 no matter what their level is, and you get points for knock outs along the way as you rank up.

Anyone who has made it out of the campaign in enough of a state to free Ranked Battles can enter; you need not have completed the campaign in its entirety, just enough to access the mode. If you are less experienced with competitive Pokémon Legends ZA the level normalization can actually assist you since it eliminates grind advantage some players build up over the length of a full season.

Allowed Pokémon

  • Polyte Flying-type Pokémon that originate from a certain Lumiose or Hyperspace Pokédex entry. (e.g. Talonflame, Pidgey line, Dragonite, Charizard, Salamence, Corviknight, Crobat, Togekiss, and the like.)
  • Any Pokémon with a secondary typing of Flying (Gyarados, Charizard etc.) are acceptable if listed.

Restricted Pokémon Limits

  • Only one can be restricted to per team: Yveltal or Rayquaza. Each match is played 4 v 4, so you will frequently be taking dual restricted solo even if your team has only one.

Team Rules

  • Maximum three Pokémon per match. All auto-scaled to level 50 regardless of the level trained to.
  • Off a team, with duplicates in the Pokédex, and no duplicate held items either — you can‘t have three Pokémon all holding the same berry or stat-enhancement item.
  • You can catch Pokémon ranging from level 1 all the way up to 100 it‘s only when they go into battle that the level 50 cap kicks in.

Battle Format

  • Winning in the older ranked formats was achieved by simply “win or lose” through winning battles. In newer formats (such as four player) ranked battle, games are fast paced and victory is paid for with points gained by knock outs.

Season 14 Rewards

Promotion rewards bring back a set of classic Mega Stones as you climb through the mid-tier ranks:

Mega Salamence Again, I‘ve used Mega Salamence for three seasons now, and it still remains a top tier choice here. Intimidate on switch-in weakens incoming physical hits, and after Mega Evolves, the distribution allows it to threaten nearly anything listed at Flying-only.

Talonflame Fast, powerful, and has priority Acrobatics. Punishes any Pokémon that even looks at it funny. It was the primary reason for many early windups in my tests.

Corviknight The bulky counter to a format loaded with glass-cannon sweepers. Doesn‘t hit as hard, but it sticks around long enough to stall out Mega Evolution timers, which certainly isn‘t something to be ignored in chaos four-player.

Dragonite–Good typing coverage; quite tanky, allowing it to survive a hit or two before retaliating. A good alternative if you don‘t want to rely on one overrated fragile sweeper.

Gliscor The Ground/Flying typing provides it with some rather vital resistances the rest of this list lacks, given most of this list‘s Flying-types are equally weak to Electric, Rock, and Ice.

Noivern – Quick and elusive, particularly with a moveset based on coverage moves rather than pure Flying-type attacks.

Togekiss More of a support than a sweeper. Paralysis, flinch, and stat drop from the likes of Air Slash make it a good glue pokemon for a slower-paced team.

Gyarados Water/Flying typing helps dodge some of the shared weaknesses on this list, but it‘s definitely a niche pick rather than a top-tier one these days.

What all of the top contenders have in common: since Electric, Rock, and Ice are everyone‘s weaknesses, the best choices are either Pokémon that directly negate one of those types (Gyarados, Gliscor) or ones that dish out so much damage that they‘ll finish the fight before it becomes a problem (Mega Salamence, Talonflame).

Best Team Combinations

Offensive Team Dragonite, Talonflame, Corviknigth, the three of them excel at speed and pressure early on, the Corviknight is the sole piece that might stall if the first two do not come quickly.

Asteady team of Gliscor, Togekiss, and Salamence I ran this for two consecutive days in one tournament and was stable throughout even against quick offensive teams as Gliscor was there for Salamence to soak up what it couldn‘t.

Bulk-First Team Corviknights, Gliscors, Togekisses playerfor-players who prefer to come out on top in the overkill war than in the air battle. Less points in the beginning, but a big help with incorrectly timed Megas.

Legendary-Anchored Team Rayquaza, Talonflame, Dragonite using your limited slot on Rayquaza and establishing speed is fine if you‘re comfortable jumping in one direction from the get go in an aggressive manner.

Coverage-centeredteam Yveltal, Noivern, Gyarados — depends on type diversity more than raw stats and can be particularly successful v. same-3-5-7-lobby “meta” Teams.

These all work because they divide the roles, rather than stacking three sweepers or three tanks. In four-player play, having at least 1 Pokémon take the brunt of a bad opening rather than three is more important than in the previous 1v1 ranked format.

Tips to Rank Up Faster
