Look, I get it. You are addicted to Giovanni in Pokémon Go, and it is unattainable. This is why I spent three days being literally ruined by this guy before I realized what really works.

The second phase becomes tricky with Giovanni in Pokémon GO. You will meet one of three Pokémon: Shadow Kangaskhan (Fighting, Water, Ice, and Psychic mode); Shadow Nidoking (Ice, Water, and Psychic Mode); or Shadow Rhyperior (Water, Grass, Ice, and Steel mode).

- Rather than Lucario: Machamp Cross Chop with Counter.
- Rather than Swampert: Kyogre or such a Water-type.
- In place of Zekrom: Electivire with Thunder Shock + Thunder Punch.
It is not about possessing good Pokemon. It’s about covering all combinations of his team.
The One That Changed Everything Strategy.
And this is where it became interesting. I learned strategies most guides don’t describe.
The Switch Delay Trick: a two-second delay works when any of the Pokemon switch or if one of them faints; Giovanni is affected. In that window, he can’t attack.
As soon as the battle started, I changed my lead Pokemon. Those two seconds of freedom let me land faster attacks Giovanni couldn’t block.
Pugging in the Shield: Giovanni has two shields. I learned to deploy fast-charging attacks like Power-Up Punch and Cross Chop that could drain his shields after a few charged hits, usually the first two.
The Scouting Technique: With your Super Rocket Radar, you can intentionally miss your first strike to scout Giovanni’s second Pokémon. I followed this plan, saw he had Rhyperior, and returned with Swampert and took him down.

- When you defeat all leaders, you receive the Super Rocket Radar.
- Use the Super Rocket Radar to track Giovanni to PokeStops.
The annoying part? You will go through several PokeStops and see decoy Grunts before you reach the real Giovanni. I checked seven stops before I found him.
Common Mistakes I Made
Mistake 1: I used strong attacks on Giovanni’s shields and didn’t focus on fast-charging attacks at the beginning.
Mistake 2: I kept forming teams that worked well against one Phase 2 Pokemon but not the rest. Take a Pokemon that has universal coverage, such as Swampert.
Mistake 3: It took me until the fifth attempt to learn that a two-second switch-delay window exists. Once I started exploiting it, fights became much more comfortable.

This is what I learned: it is not about having the strongest Pokemon. It’s about learning his patterns, building smart coverage, and exploiting mechanics like switch delay.
Giovanni’s team composition also flipped during 2025, and a monthly rotation makes it interesting. You can’t use the same team forever.
The biggest takeaway? Losses should not discourage you. Your initial meeting should be reconnoitering to figure out his Phase.
