Your Instagram presence is awful right now. Mine did too. Here is the no-BS plan to make it happen in 2025.
I am not going to mince words: the Instagram algorithm evolves. Until you are willing not only to keep posting beautiful pictures but also to make some wishes, you’ll end up toast, following a similar pattern. I experienced this when I lost 70 percent of my engagements in one night.
But after trying what works (not what some guru says it does), I discovered the game. Here’s your blueprint.
Table of Contents
Reels Aren’t Optional Anymore
This is something you most likely don’t want to hear, but if you are not using Reels, you are practically unseen. I put it off for months because I felt stupid speaking into my phone. Then I posted one test Reel. It received 10 times as many views as my previous five posts.
This is the point: the Instagram algorithm currently prioritizes video content over still images. Another picture from Sprout Social shows that Reels are consistently discovered more than other content. It does not require any fancy editing, but only getting people hooked within the first three seconds and using trending audio. I began with plain before-and-after fashion films.
It took half a minute to make, and suddenly people I had never heard of were watching.
The catch? Post them consistently—goal: three or more Reels/week. Quantity is second place to quality; however, without it, you will wane.
Stop Using Hashtags Like It’s 2019
I was used to leaving 30 random hashtags under each post. Spoiler: it tanked my reach. Instagram’s search capabilities hav; have evolved; they are not only about hashtags. It has to do with captions, ALT text, and even comments.
Mix it up. Use 5-10 niche-specific hashtags (not the huge ones with 5 million posts), include relevant key phrases in your captions naturally, and write real ALT text for your photographs. I started describing my pictures by talking about things like a small business owner’s workspace setup instead of leaving the photos empty. According to SocialInsider, my posts started appearing in searches I hadn’t reached before.
Pro tip: See which hashtag sets actually work by checking your Instagram analytics. I spilled half of mine after learning they could give no engagement.
Make People Share Your Stuff.
Instagram’s algorithm in 2025 will care less about likes and more about shares. When a person sends your post to a friend or adds it to their Story, that’s gold. Trimark Digital said shares are Instagram’s way of telling it your content is worth showing to new people.
So how do you get shares? Send your content worth sending. I started making ones I would save to read later and use: mini-posts of useful hacks and tips, or memes that resonated with me. Carousel posts (swipe-throughs) are perfect for this. Edits increased the number of pictures you can use in a carousel to 20, and audiences can binge them.
Also, ask. You can add such a line at the end of your captions as: Send this to a friend who needs to see it. Sounds simple, but it works.
In Reality, Speak to Your Audience.
This is self-evident, yet most people post and ghost. I was guilty of it too. After that, I started responding to all comments and direct messages in the first hour after posting. My reach jumped 40% in two weeks.
Instagram monitors your engagement rate. The quicker people engage with what you post, the more the algorithm pushes it. Reply to comments (add comments to your captions), enquire using polls and Q&A stickers (added to Stories). Make your account engaging like a discussion, not a poster.
I began interacting with posts in my niche; also not spammy, great post. Replies, not points of pseudo-thought. It builds community and signals to Instagram that you are present in your area, which Later recommends.
Carousels: Your Secret Weapon.
When everybody is obsessing over Reels, carousels quietly drive some of the highest engagement rates. I uploaded a 10-slide carousel that breaks down a how-to guide. It received more saves and shares than I had made in months.
Why? Instagram adores people swiping through your post and spending more time on it. Plus, carousels appear several times in feeds as people swipe, increasing exposure.
Reset Your Account Signals
If your reach dropped drastically, you may need to reconfigure your account to adjust its algorithmic indicators. I found this tip in an Instagram post, and it helped. Plan to clear your feed of old interests, read what is in your niche during the week, and cull unresponsive followers.
It is as if I were saying to Instagram, “I am serious about this particular audience. It will not happen overnight, but you will start making yourself visible to the right people.
The Bottom Line
Growing your Instagram following isn’t about tricks and hacks. It is about knowing what Instagram wants: grabby, re-shareable, video-centered content that makes people spend time on it. Share consistently, always optimize to be found, invite people to share, and actually interact with your community.
I’m not saying it’s easy. However, my outreach has recovered, and I’ve expanded after months of testing these strategies. Begin with one strategy this week. Test it. Adjust. Repeat. That is no longer the case for your Instagram.
