Listen, I will be frank: I initially didn’t believe BasedLabs AI was anything more than another over-hyped AI company. However, I was impressed after spending a weekend trying it out. It is one of those sites that doesn’t make everything complicated, and you can start playing without reading 50 pages of the manual.
Here is what I learned about using BasedLabs AI, starting with setup and your first project.

What Is BasedLabs AI Anyway?
BasedLabs AI is a platform that lets you create images, videos, and audio using various AI models. Think of it as your creative playground, where you can turn text prompts into visuals or turn still images into short videos.
What caught my attention? It offers features such as AI image generation, video creation, face swapping, and image upscaling, among others. You don’t need to juggle multiple platforms.
Create an account. It only takes 30 seconds.
First, you’ll need an account. Go to BasedLabs.ai and create an account with your Google or Discord account. No tedious forms or email authentication messages.
After you sign up, you get 15 free credits to test the platform. That’s enough to make several pictures or a short video without spending anything.
The thing is: not all outputs cost less than the recommended 1-5 credits. It consumed 15 credits to convert just one image-to-video, though, so watch your credits.
How to Create AI Images
This is where I spent most of my time. Go to the dashboard, click Generate, and a text box for your prompt will appear.
The key here? Be specific. Type it out simply as a car, rather than a futuristic, neon-lit car on a Tokyo street at night, which is electric. The more information you input, the better you produce.
You are free to select the style of art, such as realistic, cartoon, or painting, and select your aspect ratio; square is chosen to fit social media, landscape for presentations, and anything that fits your purpose.
I experimented with some prompts, and the answers were solid, in my opinion. This isn’t ideal, but it’s much better than I expected from a free tool.
Creating Videos from Images
This feature blew my mind. Click on image-to-video on the features menu, choose your image, and press Make video. The artificial intelligence gives the image movement and animates your photo within seconds.
Word of advice: it works best with realistic pictures. I experimented with a few pixel art images, and the outcome was, to say the least.
But when I applied it to a landscape photograph? Chef’s kiss. The flowers of the clouds were floating, the water dazzled– it was like magic.
Exploring the Features
BasedLabs offers a variety of AI models, including photorealism, pixel art, anime, and general-purpose models. Each model has advantages, so there is nothing to fear in trying them.
What did I like most? The community gallery. You can also look at other users’ projects, replicate their prompts, and learn how to do it. It is free inspiration in its pure sense.
Also, you can enlarge low-quality photos and change faces in pictures or videos – ideal for memes or creative work.
My Tips After Testing It Out
Start simple. Do not attempt a masterpiece in your first attempt. Start with simple tests, understand the AI’s reaction, and play with it.
Use the prompt library. BasedLabs includes written prompts you can use if you are stumped. They’re great for learning how to make your own.
Watch your credits. Unused credits carry forward to the following month, which isn’t bad, but don’t spend them all at once like I almost did.
Join the Discord. It is a pro-social society. I got answers to my questions there faster than anywhere else.
Is It Worth Using?
For me? Yeah, absolutely. It will not replace professional design software; however, for creating content fast, social media imagery, or simply trying out AI, it is a justified choice.
The default plan gives you enough credits to get through everything. Once you like it, the paid plans are affordable at $19 or $ 49/month, depending on how much you create. That’s a win in my book.
